The object of this book is to provide facilitators, regardless of their knowledge of poetry, with a template to conduct an entire year of poetry workshops for seniors.

By Carol A. Adams

ISBN #9781897113578

“We discover through poetry writing the connection between our own lives and the lives of others. We realize that we are related to each other, to the unknown and to all of creation. Recognizing this helps us to heal. When you are surprised by your own poetry or touched by the poetry of others, you come to the heart of poetry as healer”.

- Carol A. Adams

The artistic and dramatic qualities of the book are enough to recommend it to anyone. It focuses on residents in a long term care facility, though the benefits can be extended to younger seniors and mature adults in a private home setting. Many will be able to use the worksheets, with their easy, informal format, to do similar work in their own facilities or with groups of seniors anywhere.

About the Author

Carol A. Adams is widely published. Her poetry has appeared in a number of literary journals and anthologies. She has created a series of Seniors’ Poetry Workshops based on a series of articles she wrote on the Craft of Poetry for the “Canadian Writers Journal,” a monthly column for the Town Crier Chain of newspapers and a series of Poetry Workshops for Students conducted in the 2001-04 timeframe. Her poetic work was recently featured in the 2005 book The Missing Line, published by York University’s Canadian Woman Studies and using one of Carol’s poems, “The Missing Line,” as the title piece.

Educated in South-East England and at Alliance Francaise in Paris, she later immigrated to Canada, graduating from Glendon College, a bilingual liberal arts campus of York University, with majors in English and Creative Writing. A sensitive observer of nature and people, she discovered a passion for writing in mid-life and loves the music of language. Her great joy is to make words sing, especially in poetry, which she believes is a creation in the unfolding of meaning, in symbol and image.

Carol A. Adams now lives in Don Mills with her husband, Bob, a native Nova Scotian, who assists her during the poetry sessions. She now teaches English in Toronto, as well as writing and conducting poetry workshops.
