Lanark County. Where else can you live surrounded by forested hills, fairly clean rivers, farms, wetlands and wildlife -- yet be only an hour from our capital city with a national art gallery, fine restaurants and an international airport?

by Paul Keddy
ISBN#9780981046204

This book introduces the human and environmental history of Lanark County, including topics such as geology, forest types, human settlement, wetlands and special places. Did you know about the distinctive marble bedrock, and how it affects forests and the distribution of some species of wild orchids?  Or that an ancient ocean shoreline of the Champlain Sea can be traced from Almonte to Perth?  That a huge fire burned the east side of the county in 1870? Or that there is an enormous meteor crater near Holleford?  These are a few of the surprises.  The book is essential reading if you live in or near Lanark County, and is the perfect guide for visitors and cottage owners. There are 18 maps of the county showing key natural features. There are even 20 suggested places for tours, including the Purdon Conservation Area, the Carleton Place hackberry stand, and the Holleford meteor crater.  Up-to-date listings of 47 provincially significant wetlands and 18 Areas of Natural and Scientific Interest are included and mapped.  The book also includes numerous line drawings, some prepared by the well-known artist Howard Coneybeare.
